Atlanta Proposal Photographer | How to Plan the Perfect Proposal

Proposal season is here and if you’re planning to pop the question, congratulations! This is one of the most exciting moments of your life! As Atlanta and North Georgia proposal photographers and videographers, we’ve had the joy of capturing countless “yes!” moments from waterfall views, hiking trails to right in your backyard!

Here’s what we’ve learned over the years about planning a proposal that feels authentic, emotional, and absolutely unforgettable (and looks amazing on camera too).

1. Choose a Meaningful Location for your Proposal in Atlanta!

The best proposals happen in places that mean something to your story as a couple. Think beyond “pretty” and focus on a location that is personal to the both of you. Maybe it’s:

  1. A spot where you had your first date, or that is a favorite spot for the both of you.
  2. If your both into hiking and want a stunning view where you propose there are plenty of North Georgia trails and paths.
  3. Or if you want more of a Downtown vibe you can choose a cozy corner in Downtown Roswell or Marietta Square! Especially during the holidays, when everything is decorated with lights and mistletoe 😉

Places to avoid in Atlanta:

  1. Trendy proposal areas: These places tend to be overcrowded because of the popularity of these areas. And these locations tend to take away from the proposal, as they can be loud and overcrowded. Making the proposal not as intimate. Unless this popular location has significant value, I recommend trying to avoid these areas.
  2. Try not to get pressured by family or friends to propose at a certain location of their liking. This isn’t about your family and friend’s ideas. This moment is between you and her, so this location should ultimately be your preference.
  3. Map out parking and the proposal site before hand. Make sure it’s not to far away from the proposal area. Plus, be mindful of how far she has to walk if she is wearing heels. This could make or break a location.

This is a lot of stuff to keep in mind when choosing a location, but as photographers, we love helping our clients research the perfect Atlanta or North Georgia proposal location that fits their personalities! So we can help you along the way.

2. Capturing the Moment with Photo and Video

And yes, I did just say and Video but I will get to that in a moment. When it comes to proposals, there’s only one chance to capture the moment and trust us, it goes by in a blur.

Photos beautifully freeze the emotions in time that look of surprise, the tearful smile, the ring reveal. These photos are great to announce on social media to friends and family. Also depending if your family or friends are around you can get photos with them as well.

Now here me out. With your proposal on video, you get to relive the entire experience over and over FOREVER. Her surprised reaction, your voice, her laughter, and her saying “yes.” She will appreciate that you put in your effort to not just hire a photographer but a videographer. That will make her go “Damn,’ and tells her you put your effort into capturing the proposal to the max!

4. Keep It Real and Personal

Forget trying to create a “Pinterest-perfect” moment. The most moving proposals are the ones that reflect you two. Be yourself, speak from the heart, and let the moment unfold naturally. Authenticity always photographs and films beautifully.

Also to calm down nerves and be more confident going into the proposal. In your spare time practice your kneel. It’s traditional to kneel on your left and since most people are right handed they hold the ring in their right hand. But but if your a lefty, like me :), kneeling on your right might be more comfortable. So whichever is more comfortable, just make sure when your kneeling, it’s a fluid motion and your not hesitant.

5. Celebrate the “Yes!”

Once she says yes (and she will!), have a plan ready to keep the celebration going. Whether it’s a surprise dinner reservation with family, a champagne toast at your favorite spot, a cozy picnic, or even a mini engagement shoot right after the proposal, don’t let the magic fade too quickly. Those first few minutes after the “yes” are pure gold full of laughter, happy tears, and that can’t-stop-smiling kind of energy. It’s the perfect time to capture a few just-engaged photos or video clips while the excitement still feels brand new. You’ll love looking back at those moments later and remembering exactly how it felt to start this new chapter together.
