Is the Sony 50–150mm f/2 the Ultimate Wedding Lens?

We recently invested in the Sony 50–150mm f/2 G Master lens and had some thoughts we wanted to share if you were thinking of buying this lens for weddings. Every image shown was shot with this lens.

Description: The Sony 50 – 150mm is “Uniquely fast and versatile, the Sony 50-150mm f/2 GM, from Sony, is a normal- to short-telephoto zoom distinguished by its impressively bright f/2 constant maximum aperture. Ideal for portraiture, weddings, events, and indoor and close-range sports, this lens is also a good choice for photographers and videographers looking to replace a handful of primes with a single fast zoom without sacrificing on speed”

Lets first check out the pros and cons.

PROS

Extremely Versatile Focal Range

For most of the wedding day, we found ourselves shooting primarily on a 50mm, especially for getting ready and candid moments. But when it came time for the ceremony, this lens quickly became a favorite. We loved being able to step back and capture a wider perspective of the space while still getting those intimate, emotional moments from a distance. It gave us the flexibility to stay unobtrusive during the ceremony while still telling the full story of the wedding, and that alone made it feel like such a valuable part of our kit.

Great Compression Without Feeling Too Distant

One of the things we loved most about shooting with the Sony 50–150mm f/2 G Master lens for weddings was the way it creates a beautifully flattering, compressed look for portraits without making us feel disconnected from the moment. Even when shooting from farther back during ceremonies, we still felt close to the couple – able to capture genuine expressions, emotion, and interaction without being intrusive. That balance between compression and connection makes the Sony 50 – 150mm especially valuable for wedding photography, whether you’re shooting portrait sessions, candid wedding moments, or full ceremony coverage.

Internal Zoom!

One of the biggest standouts of this lens was the internal zoom. Because the lens doesn’t extend while zooming, it stays perfectly balanced in hand and on a gimbal, which made a noticeable difference during long wedding days. It also meant faster, quieter adjustments during ceremonies and intimate moments—no shifting weight, no distracting movement, just smooth transitions between focal lengths. From a reliability standpoint, the sealed internal zoom also gives extra peace of mind in unpredictable wedding conditions, helping protect against dust and moisture while allowing us to stay fully focused on capturing the moment.

Strong Low-Light Performance

We were really impressed with how the Sony 50–150mm handled dim churches and reception lighting. Even during darker ceremonies or moody reception spaces, we could capture clean, sharp images without feeling like we had to constantly rely on flash. For weddings, where lighting can change drastically throughout the day, having a lens that performs confidently in low light made a huge difference

Fewer Lens Changes = Fewer Missed Moments

Honestly, the biggest pro for us is how it lets us shoot so much of the day without constantly changing lenses. On a wedding day, every second counts, and swapping lenses can mean missing tiny but meaningful moments. Being able to move seamlessly from ceremony to portraits to reception candid’s lets us capture the full story without slowing down or feeling like we’re chasing shots. It’s a huge time-saver and gives us the freedom to focus on being present, instead of worrying about our gear.

CONS

Price Point

One of the most noticeable downsides is the cost. The Sony 50–150mm sits around ~$3,899–$3,998 before tax in the U.S. market. Once you add sales tax at checkout it can easily push your total well north of $4,100–$4,200 USD. For many small business owners and wedding shooters, that’s a significant investment. Especially when you’re also balancing bodies, other lenses, and accessories in your kit.

Size and Weight

While not unusually large for a professional telephoto zoom, this lens is still a substantial piece of glass. For what you’re getting optically, it’s not a huge con compared to faster super-telephoto lenses. But it’s worth acknowledging if you’re sensitive to overall kit bulk. To be fair, we haven’t noticed our arms getting tired with it even for 10 hour days.

Still need a wide angle

Even with this versatile telephoto zoom in your bag, you still need a great wide-angle in your lineup. For ceremony overviews, group portraits, and venue/environment shots. We pair this lens with a 12–24mm in our kit to make sure nothing is missed. The 50–150mm f/2 is incredible for portraits and beautifully compressed backgrounds. It doesn’t replace the need for true wide coverage – it’s a powerhouse, not an all-in-one solution.

Should you buy it for weddings?

The Sony 50–150mm f/2 has quickly become one of our favorite lenses for wedding days. The image quality is genuinely unreal. Incredibly sharp, smooth, and consistent across the range, with beautiful compression and depth that shines during ceremonies and portraits. It performs flawlessly in real-world wedding conditions and feels like a true workhorse. While it’s definitely an investment, if your budget allows, we absolutely recommend it. For working photographers, it’s the kind of lens that earns its place in your kit. It can be written off as a business expense, making the value even easier to justify. Without a doubt, it’s one of the best lenses we’ve used.
