How to Look Natural in Wedding Photos (Without Feeling Stiff or Awkward)

Hey readers! My name is Shavonne, a wedding photographer and videographer based in Kennesaw, Georgia. I run a wedding photography and videography company with my fiancé, Zack, and the truth is, most couples don’t know how to look natural when posing. Even Zack and I get anxious, and awkward when we are on camera.

That’s the issue – everyone expects you to look like a literal model in your wedding photos! It creates unnecessary stress and unrealistic expectations. What we’re looking for is genuine moments and poses that feel true to you. Throughout this guide, we’ll be sharing some techniques and the unique poses we use to help couples feel comfortable and natural in front of the camera.

Prepping for Natural Wedding Photos

Before we even get a couple into a pose, we talk to them about their boundaries; we ask whether they’re comfortable with us using physical touch to guide them into a pose and about their overall photo stamina. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to communicate with your photographer and videographer beforehand about your concerns so they know what poses to avoid and which poses are suitable for you! Because ultimately it leads the both of you to become less anxious when you have a photographer & videographer that knows your limits.

The Best Poses for Couples Who Don’t Like Posing!

In Hold

For emotional wedding photos, the best images usually happen when you are close to each other. Poses that have you both in hold of each other are great to start out with as they tend to ease your nerves. Like hugging in general, it makes you feel secure, makes you happy and relaxes you. If you are feeling nervous or awkward these are great to help you feel grounded and safe in each others arms.

Micro Poses: Close-up/Hands

This is a great way to continue being in each others embrace by touching, but slowly wean off into micro poses. This can be pictures of your hands with the rings, the grooms watch, the groom fixing the brides necklace, fixing the boutonniere, etc. All these soft and gentle movements with your hands should get those pesky nerves out of your hands.

Wide Shots Are Your Friends

Wide shots are great for taking away the spotlight on the two of you. The photographer will be super far away and you won’t feel like the photos are invading your space, which will automatically make you feel looser and more relax in these poses. Here I usually recommend the groom to dip the bride, spin her, or lift her up and spin her. And my absolute favorite for breaking any sort of awkwardness, is asking the couple to look into each others eyes and smile. That tends to do the trick. It gives off a romantic, and carefree look especially when you have a beautiful environment surrounding you.
